CE 9 Mass Test Questions

Hello class,

These are the three questions that I will ask you for the test:

1. In the story of Emmaus Road (Luke 24:13-35), explain how Jesus shows the two-fold structure of the Mass. In part do they recognize Jesus?

2. Name the 5 types of Old Testament sacrifice. Where does todah fit in? What is a libation?

3. What is the difference between an internal sacrifice and an external sacrifice? Explain why internal sacrifice must accompany external sacrifice? Use Psalm 51 as an example.

Use these to prepare your answers beforehand.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Here are the notes that you will need to use to study for the test.

For question 1:
http://www.salvationhistory.com/studies/lesson/supper_a_biblical_introduction_to_the_mass

For question 2: http://www.salvationhistory.com/studies/lesson/supper_given_for_you_the_old_testament_story_of_sacrifice
For definition of Libation: use Google search

For question 3:
http://www.salvationhistory.com/studies/lesson/supper_one_sacrifice_for_all_time

External sacrifice refers to what you do for someone in a selfless way.
Internal sacrifice refers to what your intention is when doing an external act.
Refer to the skits we did concerning "doing something good and MEANING it" instead of "doing something that looks good, but your heart is not really into it."

God bless you,

Mr. MacLennan

CE 10 Final Writing Assignment

Hello class,

There is one more thing I need from you:

Remember the mid-piece reflection you wrote last class? Remember, I would like parts 4, 5, and 6 of Pope Benedict XVI's article to be responded to according to the sheet I passed out in class.

Here is the link where you can find Pope Benedict's article and the handout with the specific questions on it. You will also find the questions for the recent movies we have watched. THANKFULLY, you don't necessarily need to have watched the movies in order to answer the questions.

https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B7-4zrcqDIyGUVJEWFZMWDZkbzA/edit

I would like parts 4, 5, and 6, along with parts 1, 2, and 3 (or whatever you have) as a final assignment to add to your overall mark.

<><><><><><><><>

Currently, your mark may appear lower than you expect.

There is ONE MAIN REASON FOR THIS: You have not passed in most of the articles, responses, or questions from the Human Experience movie and Blood Money movie.

If you HAVE passed all of this work in, your mark will be where it should be
If you have passed in your service hours, your mark will be pretty good.

ALL THIS IS DUE BEFORE 9:00 AM THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 15.

God bless you all,

Mr. MacLennan

With the invasive species you chose in class, I would like you to research and answer the following four questions:

1. Write about where it is originally from
2. Explain how it dominates an ecosystem - What does the species do to dominate?

Chem 11 Extra Stoichiometry Problems Q&A

THE QUESTIONS:

1. Consider the reaction: 2 Na + 2 H2O à 2 NaOH + H2(g)
a. If 13.02 g of Na is thrown into a lake and completely reacted, and a total of 3.90 L of H2 are produced at STP, what is the percent purity of the Na?
b. What mass (in grams) of Na would be required to produce 2.895 L of H2 at STP, if the Na has a purity of 43.60%?

2. Consider the reaction: 8 H2S(g) + 4 O2 à S8 + 8 H2O
a. If 1.000 L of H2S reacts with excess O2 at STP, and 1.324 g of S8 are produced, what is the percentage yield of the reaction?
b. What is the volume (in litres) of O2 required to produce 4.25 g of H2O at STP, if the reaction has a 83.0% yield?

3. Consider the reaction: N2(g) + O2(g) + Br2(g) à 2 NOBr(g)
If 3.509 g of N2, 3.089 L of O2, and 23.71 g of Br2 are mixed together in a large vessel,
a. Which chemical is the limiting reactant?
b. How much NOBr (in litres) can be produced, if the reaction proceeds to completion?
c. What mass (in grams) of the excess reactants are left over after the reaction?

4. Consider the reaction: H2SO4 + 2 NaOH à Na2SO4 + 2 H2O
A simple neutralization is carried out using a bottle of H2SO, having a concentration of 64.0% by weight and claiming to have 95.00% purity. If 10.00 g of the H2SO4 solution is reacted with excess NaOH, and 8.708 g of Na2SO4 is produced, is the label accurate in claiming to have 95.00% purity? If not, what is the purity of the H2SO4 solution?

THE ANSWERS:

1 a.       61.4%
1 b.       13.28 g  Na (impure)

2 a.       92.48%
2 b.      3.18 L  O

3 a.      N2 is limiting
3 b.      5.614 L  NOBr
3 c.      0.403 g  O2; 3.6836 g  Br2

4.        The label is not accurate in claiming 95.00% purity; The purity of the solution is 93.90%.

Limiting, Excess, % purity, % yield, titrations TEST DATE

Hello class!

I bet you are all glad to hear that this unit test is being pushed ahead a class (I hear the cheer).

The reason for this is two-fold

1. many of our classmates will be out of school Thursday and Friday
2. Many of us are still in need of review

THEREFORE: I am moving the test date to

C block = Test on Tuesday, April 24
H block = Test on Wednesday, April 25

<><><><><><><>

In the meantime, we will begin the next unit on Atomic Theory. Those of us who miss the notes, make sure you get them from your classmates.

Why I hate religion but love Jesus - RESPONSES

Today in class, we watched the youtube video "Why I hate religion but love Jesus"

watch it here:

We also watched a response by a Catholic priest

watch it here:

We responded to both videos by saying what we liked and what we didn't like about each.

THEN we discussed various techniques people use to persuade. There was a handout.
I will post a link to the handout on the right side of the blog and call it "techniques of persuasion".

<><><><>

HOMEWORK
Watch BOTH videos again and write down 3 persuasion techniques that each uses to persuade the listener of the message.

Remember, persuasion isn't bad or good--what is bad or good is the nature of what someone is trying to persuade you of.

Forgiveness and Sin Articles PLUS a TEST REVIEW!!!

Hello class!

I apologize for the late post. Nevertheless, here are the links to the three articles we used for Unit 5 on "Sin & Forgiveness":

Article 1 - "The Problem of Evil" by Peter Kreeft

Article 2 - "Whatever Happened to Mortal Sin?" by Fr. William Saunders

Article 3 - "Why do we have to go to confession to receive forgiveness?" by Matthew Pinto

Here is the Long Answer Question you will bring to the test:

The issue: US President Barack Obama originally forced healthcare institutions to provide abortion services and contraception, even though such actions go directly against Church teaching and Catholic conscience. After a short fight, Obama decided not to force them to provide these medical options. NOW, the US government is forcing Catholic healthcare institutions and all other institutions to pay insurance for the abortion and contraceptive options of their workers. The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is murder (therefore, gravely sinful), and using contraception is also sinful.

The question: Explain, using your knowledge of conscience and sinful social structures, why the recent healthcare mandate by US President Obama is unreasonable to Catholics and other people who oppose abortion and contraception.

Points to consider:
-is the government setting up a sinful social structure according to Church teaching?
-Would an informed Catholic conscience be "okay" with paying for someone else's abortions with their tax money?
-Should a Catholic Institution (hospital, school, etc...) be forced to do something they don't believe in?
