I apologize for the late post. Nevertheless, here are the links to the three articles we used for Unit 5 on "Sin & Forgiveness":
Article 1 - "The Problem of Evil" by Peter Kreeft
Article 2 - "Whatever Happened to Mortal Sin?" by Fr. William Saunders
Article 3 - "Why do we have to go to confession to receive forgiveness?" by Matthew Pinto
Here is the Long Answer Question you will bring to the test:
The issue: US President Barack Obama originally forced healthcare institutions to provide abortion services and contraception, even though such actions go directly against Church teaching and Catholic conscience. After a short fight, Obama decided not to force them to provide these medical options. NOW, the US government is forcing Catholic healthcare institutions and all other institutions to pay insurance for the abortion and contraceptive options of their workers. The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is murder (therefore, gravely sinful), and using contraception is also sinful.
The question: Explain, using your knowledge of conscience and sinful social structures, why the recent healthcare mandate by US President Obama is unreasonable to Catholics and other people who oppose abortion and contraception.
Points to consider:
-is the government setting up a sinful social structure according to Church teaching?
-Would an informed Catholic conscience be "okay" with paying for someone else's abortions with their tax money?
-Should a Catholic Institution (hospital, school, etc...) be forced to do something they don't believe in?
